For 2015, the Richard P. Ayers Distinguished Service award is presented to Jim Smith of Republic National Distribution Company. Jim’s support and dedication to the industry is well-known, he is always there when we need him. He has supported virtually all of the CRA events such as the Blue Ribbon Reception, Drink Red Wear Red, WestEx, Industry Spotlight Awards, Golf Tournaments, you name it, Jim has supported it. He has served as an officer on the CRA executive committee several times, and is a welcome participant at many of the CRA Board functions, events and meetings. He most recently joined the newly formed CRA Legislative Sub-Committee providing an important voice at the table as we debate issues and current legislation.
Jim has had 40 successful years in the beverage alcohol industry, holding numerous leadership roles in the business. His career began in 1973 as a merchandiser in Tampa, which eventually led to sales executive positions in Sarasota, Tampa and South Florida. In 1990, he relocated to Colorado with his family before returning to Florida a decade later to serve as state president. In 2004, he returned to Colorado and assumed his role as president of the Colorado market. Throughout his tenure, Jim created a professional and personal legacy which embodies the values of the RNDC - a culture of family, professionalism and accountability.
Upon the announcement of his retirement from RNDC, Jim had this to say: "I am fortunate to have had a long career in a dynamic industry associated with a great organization like RNDC. Having the pleasure to work with RNDC Ownership and all of the Associates over the years is one of the most satisfying things in my life. I’m looking forward to assisting RNDC Colorado in its leadership transition in 2015."
Upon retirement Jim will remain active with RNDC in a formal knowledge transfer and mentor program. His new role ensures the successful continuity of business practices and market relationships as a new Executive Vice President assumes the leadership role for Colorado. Jim will continue to provide leadership as the President of the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of Colorado through 2015. He will remain actively involved with the Colorado Restaurant Association, Colorado Licensed Beverage Association, Mental Health America Colorado, as well as Hospitality Schools with the University of Denver And Metro State.
