September 17: Industry Spotlight Awards – Save the Date!
Last night we had the honor to award $41,000 in scholarships to graduating ProStart and college students, and to recognize the contributions of the teachers and mentors that make this program so successful.
For the past 20 years, Colorado ProStart has been the cornerstone of our workforce development efforts. Today, we serve 38 high schools and more than 900 students statewide with a program that is nationally recognized as a top model for student success and industry engagement.
We could not have reached this milestone without our partner Sysco Denver. They have been a constant supporter of the Foundation, and a true advocate for our scholarships and our programs. We also wish to thank all of our program partners, sponsors, individual donors, and CRA chapters for their ongoing support. This truly is an industry supported effort. At the time of writing this newsletter, we are still in the thick of it at the state capitol after a whirlwind of liquor related issues were brought forward in the 11th hour. We are fighting hard to protect restaurant interests and will give you a full report once the dust has settled.
We were able once again to defeat the attempt to introduce local control over minimum wage. We have consistently fought against this legislation as it has the potential to cause significant confusion for businesses as a patchwork of local wage and hour laws are established by local governments, sometimes literally across the street from one another. Restaurants in a jurisdiction with significantly higher labor cost requirements are at a competitive disadvantage from restaurants across the street that have lower labor costs.
